The move to electric vehicles is, on its own, an unprecedented transformation, and one that has to take place in parallel with other challenging transformations such as the move to customer-centricity, softwarization, and ADAS/AD. As if that picture isn’t complex enough, it’s now clear that there is much more to sustainable mobility than electrification.
Automakers know they must address the wider environmental impact of vehicle use, and not just the emissions from the tailpipe. And they increasingly realize that they need a holistic and systematic sustainability approach: one that addresses the entire automotive product lifecycle, as well as the business as a whole (including its processes and people) and all of its value chain. The circular economy needs to be a pervasive theme.
Although there is so much work to do, there’s also good news: Sustainability provides valuable opportunities, starting with the redefinition of the enterprise’s whole value proposition.
